Audio Class: Field Production
Field Microphone Techniques
- Speaking/Singing
- Lapel: Good
for uniformity, obscurity, but not for most
singing (dynamic range), and inconvienent for
quick changes
- Hand Held: Watch
for use by amateurs who don't know proper
technique.
- Stand:
Reduces microphone handling and handling noise,
but sometimes talent stands too far away.
- Boom/Shotgun:
Standard for film-style production. Requires a
dedicated crew member (could be the audio
person).
- Wireless: Good
mobility, but dynamic range probably not great
enough for singing. Watch out for distance and RF
interference.
- Interview
- Hand-Held:
One-mic solution, but interviewer has to remember
good technique and timing.
- Lapel: Good
for interviewer, but probably not for interviewee
unless under controlled conditions (i.e. they
don't walk away with wearing the mic!)
- Both: Lapel
on interviewer, hand-held is free for
interviewee. Optimum for both, but requires mixer
and monitoring audio.
