• Recording techniques are frequently very different for “classical” vs. “pop” music.

• Classical Music

  • Fewer microphones.
  • More reliance on musicians’ balance.
  • Musicians sometimes object to imposing hardware, close miking.
  • Visible microphones and hardware sometimes intrude on visual.

• Pop Music

  • More microphones, frequently one (or more) per instrument.
  • More reliance on mixing to achieve balance.
  • Musicians frequently use microphones, etc. actively.
  • Mics, stands, speakers, hardware part of genre.
