My greatest fear about driving in
England was turning (without thinking) into the right side of the street while negotiating
an intersection. I kept having to repeat to myself (and Lacy would remind me) "Left
side of the street
Left side of the street!" It only took a
couple days to get used to the left side, but then the second-order effects started
becoming issues. Those of use who drive all our lives on the right side of the street (in
BOTH senses of the word!) come to adjust our position in lane by putting ourselves over
the left-center of the lane (because that's where the steering wheel is). Unfortunately,
even after remembering which side of the road to drive on, a couple times I drove up on
the curb because I was still adjusting my position in lane by right-hand lane standards. Traffic laws in England either don't exist or they are only "serving suggestions" (like those cans of peas with the beautiful photographs of complete meals). |
