We sailed down to the village of Bowness, at the midpoint of the lake where they put us off to wait for the next boat. Then we took another boat on the cruise around the islands in the mid part of the lake. On one of the small islands is a large willow tree where the branches hang way out over the edge of the island in all directions! An extraordinarily large steamer took us to Lakeside at the southern end of Lake Windemere. There are two of these ships which seat over 500 passengers each. They are so large that they were shipped to the lake in pieces and welded together on the lake. The trip was accompanied by an amusing commentary on local history and sights. We were also informed that the ship we were on had the most handsome crew on the lake and that the sister ship was disadvantaged with a very homely crew. |
