| On Tuesday morning, we packed up everything and
drove south through London to Gatwick airport to return the rental car. Between the Friday
trip from Golder's Green to Rotherthite and this trip from Rotherthite to Gatwick, we
drove completely through London, north to south. It took all morning to get to the airport
because there are no motorways that extend into the city of London. Only the last 10 miles
of the trip (after crossing the M25 ring motorway) was made on M23 into Gatwick. We grabbed a luggage cart and piled all the stuff onto it and I went to check in the car. The check in was uneventful, though they DID go out to look at the car to be sure I hadn't done anything obvious to it! We then pushed the cart up to the terminal level of the airport over to the railway wing. Upon consulting the departure times, I rushed over to the ticket window queue to get our tickets to Waterloo because the next train was less than 10 minutes away and the one after that would cut it too close to our departure time from Waterloo. It was then that we discovered that the train platforms are back down on ground level. A British Rail attendant helped us haul the luggage down the escalator and waited patiently (!) while I fished out a tip from what was left of my British money. The train at the platform was about to leave and we were just about to throw the luggage on when we were told that this was not the right train. So we waited for another 10 minutes for the Waterloo train. This train didn't stop at EVERY station along the way, it just seemed like it. But we finally got to Waterloo station just before noon. We found a luggage cart at the Waterloo platform which was an unexpected surprise as we had never seen any at any other Underground or railroad stations before. It was a good thing, because the platform was over in the next block from the main part of Waterloo station and we wheeled it through a long overpass and down a large goods lift (freight elevator) into the main part of Waterloo station. We now had 90 minutes to wait before boarding the Eurostar to Paris, so I went off to get some lunch while Lacy sat with the luggage cart. I found some good cheese and tomato sandwiches at a stand where they also had caramel cake. So I bought a couple pieces of that also to share with Lacy. Then I went over to the Burger King for milk (which wasn't sold at any of the indigenous food outlets in the station!) While I was there, I also got some chips (french fries). |
