Technological miracles aside, we
arrived at Gare du Nord (North Train Station) in Paris on schedule. Again
we found a luggage cart and piled our stuff on it. Although the book claims that Gare du
Nord was also remodeled for Eurostar service, the platform we got off at sure looked like
a regular, unremarkable big city train platform. There were no special Eurostar
accouterments that we could see. Proceeding past the engine into the main part of the
station we discovered how enormous it is. About 20 meters past the end of the track, we were met by a lady named Marys who runs a bed & breakfast. She offered to put us up at her establishment, but we had already booked all 7 nights at the d'Artagnan Youth Hostel because we were told (in London) that rooms were hard to find in Paris at that time. We would have been better off at her B&B (and it was cheaper, also), but we couldn't cancel the reservations. Lacy took her card so she could call her about a room after I returned to Oregon. Marys was astonished at the luggage cart full of stuff and said she couldn't see how we could travel with so much stuff. This was my sentiment exactly, but I didn't say anything because there was nothing we could do about it at that point. And besides Lacy had other things to concern her like getting us around in a French speaking country! |
