Selecting and positioning
microphones is an art, but one which can be learned.
The information about pickup types and directionality should help
in selecting a mic.
- COVERAGE
- How
much should I try to pick up with one mic?
- Use
individual mics when levels must be
adjusted separately.
- To achieve musical
balance
- Individual speakers
in discussion
- Use a
single mic for a section of instruments
(or a whole group) when:
The whole section can be picked up evenly
without leakage from other instruments or
sections.
- How
many mics should I use?
- It is
preferable to use a few microphones as
will properly pick up the sounds you
wish.
- It makes
interference between them less
likely
- It is easier to mix!
- LOCATION
& DISTANCE
- Mic
placement depends on:
- Microphone
sensitivity and pickup pattern (and how
it relates to what you are micing)
- Mic
distance depends on:
- Intensity
of source (vs. intensity of noise and
interference)
- DIRECT
vs. MICROPHONE
- Can I
get a direct feed rather than using a mic?
- If you
use a proper direct box, direct feed is
preferable because it is cleaner.
